Welcome to the website for the Wine on Stamps
Study Unit. The Study Unit was was founded by Dr. Jim Crum in 1992. After a short hiatus from in 2004, the Study Unit
went back into operation in 2006. There are now almost 50 members from 11 countries.
The May 2010
issue of Enophilatelica features an article "National Wine Week 1939-1951: A History and
Its Stamps," by Gail Unzelman. This article examines National Wine Week, which was started by the California
Wine Advisory Board as a means to celebrate and advertise wine. Each year during this campaign, the Board
issued poster stamps, all of which are illustrated in the article. Another article discusses Dr. Crook's (his real
name!) Wine of Tar, an all purpose curative sold in the 1860's and 1870's. Two revenues stamps were issued for this
product. Several new issues are also pictured and discussed.
